Watch TVNZ outside New Zealand – Unblock in Australia
TVNZ is a free streaming channel based in New Zealand. It offers on-demand and live shows such as My Kitchen Rules, Grey’s Anatomy, Wimbledon 2016, and Quantico. However, TVNZ is geoblocked outside New Zealand in countries such as Australia, South Africa, UAE, USA, UK, Canada, or Germany. There are two methods to bypass the geographical restrictions and unblock TVNZ overseas. Either use VPN or Smart DNS Proxy. In this help guide, you can find instructions on how to watch TVNZ outside New Zeland on Android, iPhone, iPad, PC, or Mac.

How to Watch TVNZ outside New Zealand using VPN
The first method you have at your disposal for unblocking TVNZ on Demand in Australia is a Virtual Private Network. By using VPN you can change your streaming device’s IP address to one that is of New Zealand. By doing so, TVNZ will think that your computer is in New Zealand. VPN can also be used to unblock other geo-restricted streaming channels such as Netflix, HBO Go, and Shomi.
- You will need to sign up for a decent and reliable VPN; one that actually has VPN servers in New Zealand
- VPN apps can be installed on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
- VPN provides you with additional security and privacy while browsing the Internet by encrypting all of your traffic.

Unblock TVNZ outside New Zealand with Smart DNS Proxy
The second method to get access to regionally restricted content is Smart DNS Proxy. Basically, a Smart DNS Proxy only redirects the geo-related URLs which expose your location to TVNZ. While using Smart DNS, your public IP address does not change. Neither is your traffic encrypted.
- When using a Smart DNS Proxy, your internet speed is not affected.
- Smart DNS Proxy can be configured on all streaming devices including your PC, Mac, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon FireTV Stick, Android, iPhone, iPad, and Smart TV.
Unlocator is a Smart DNS Proxy that actually supports unblocking TVNZ abroad. There are setup videos and guides on how to configure your streaming devices with Unlocator. A free 7-day trial means that you do not need a credit card to get an Unlocator account.

TVNZ outside New Zealand – VPN or Smart DNS to Unblock
Either VPN or Smart DNS will allow you to bypass geographic restrictions and watch TVNZ outside New Zealand. Remember to change your streaming device’s timezone to New Zealand. If you do not apply this step, you will not be able to watch geoblocked content on TVNZ, even while using VPN or Smart DNS.
I tried accessing TVNZ from Australia with ExpressVPN and it didn’t work. I ended up speaking with them and was told that currently their service only unblocks live streams but not on demand content.
Hello Bernie. Have you tried setting your device’s timezone to NZ?
Bulletvpn is the one l use here in Australia.
lve never had a problem with it in the 5 years lve been using it.
Ok I got myself PureVPN after reading comments that it would work to unblock TVNZ. Of course that turned out to be BS. I am trying to access TVNZ from the USA and was wondering how I would go about changing my PCs clock so that TVNZ thinks I am in New Zealand….I mean what value buried on my hard drive is their software looking for to determine that I am not in New Zealand when I am using a VPN with New Zealand servers. Basically at the end of the day, having access to live content is pointless to me with being so far behind timezone wise. Any suggestions to beat this geoblock would be most appreciated.
I’ve tried this with NordVPN. It actually worked fine when I was in Australia. I guess I can say screw you geo-blocking! I’m planning on testing it from Europe soon, will see how that goes.
I have nord vpn and all 33 servers arent working. time zone set to NZ also. how did you do it?
I have a PureVPN subscription that has New Zealand servers, will that work with TVNZ? Where do I access it?
Hi Charles,
Please, I’m in Europe. So how can I change my timezone to New Zealand for a time being and back to usual with minimum sweat, nice and easy? Is there any browser extension for that?
Thanks a lot.
Hi Dennis. What device are you currently using?
Hi,
What settings do use to watch TVNZ? I could not get it to work?
I work in PNG and until this month have been able to watch Sky on the sky go app via a VPN.. it looks like sky NZ has improved their software to dectect VPNs now..have you any suggestions how to get around this latest roadblock. I have tried vyprvpn and expressvpn.
Cheers
phil
I don’t know how you got expressvpn to work but I’ve just been on chat with their support for an hour and they couldn’t play anything on tvnz ondemand (and neither could I). Any advice?
Hi James. Have you tried setting your streaming device’s timezone to New Zealand?
Hi Isso, I’ve only used PIA VPN. It works with various VPN servers on the MacBook (via wifi), and the iPad & iPhones on 3G but not wifi.
Do you think it’s a problem with Flip, the modem or settings perhaps?
Hi could you help me with a VPN issue I’m having? Just moved to NZ from Oz and have Internet through Flip using a NetComm NB604N router. I can’t connect my VPN which through my iPad only through the my Mac laptop. If I put my iPad on 3G it will connect but not on wifi? Can you assist? Thanks
Hi Bec. Have you tried using different VPN protocols i.e. OpenVPN, IPSec, or L2TP? Also, do you face the same issues regardless of which VPN server you try to connect to?
